The society's quarterly journal keeps our members informed of
developments, local issues and society activities, including
forthcoming events.
It's essential reading for everyone who cares about Shoreham and the
surrounding area.
The current edition (Autumn 2011) includes:
- Stand by your Ropetackle - the Shoreham Society gives its support
to the Ropetackle Centre in its campaign for more secure finances.
- The Localism Bill - background to the Bill and its implications,
in advance of the public meeting about it which is being organised by
the Shoreham Society in February.
- The farmers' market - a personal appreciation of Shoreham and its
highly successful market, by offbeat guide writer Rob Silverstone.
- Main development projects in Shoreham - an update on significant
current and proposed projects in and around the town.
- The Leggett legacy - a tribute to the late Reg Leggett, a local
resident and estate agent who made a huge contribution to the
preservation of Shoreham's character and was a founder of the Shoreham
Society.
- Shoreham Fort - a report on the talk given to the Shoreham
Society by Gary Baines, founder of the Friends of Shoreham Fort, about
the ambitious project to restore this important historic feature.
The Summer 2011 edition included:
- Decision time on the bridge - concerns over the
consultation and apparent inflexibility over design aspects of the
proposed new Shoreham Beach footbridge.
- Regional civic activity - report on a recent
conference
to consider joint activities by civic groups and reactions to the
Localism Bill and other issues.
- The secret life of buildings - reflections on how the
buildings we inhabit affect us, and how developers should be more
sensitive to such issues.
- Major development projects - update on significant
current and proposed projects in Shoreham.
- The Green Thing - a reflection by Moyra Martin of
Shoreham Transition Town on changing attitudes to environment
responsibilities and misconceptions.
- Unearthing the unearthly - report on a recent talk on
some fascinating local history hidden behind gravestones.
- Getting involved - a wry look at how you might (or
might not) get informed about and involved in local affairs.
- Squatting law to change? - report on proposals to
make
squatting illegal in England, as it is in Scotland, and the
implications for homeless people and property owners.
The Spring 2011 edition included:
- Goodbye Civic Centre - comment on what the Ham Road site might be
used for now that the council has confirmed it's no longer need for
council offices.
- Update on the footbridge - concerns remain about the proposals to
replace the Shoreham Beach footbridge, with continuing doubts about the
consultation process.
- Thoughts on Southlands Hospital - Beryl Ferrers-Guy reflects on
the
consultations and remaining issues over proposed changes to the
hospital.
- Past chairmen remember - continuing our series about former
society chairmen, this time featuring Stanley Ball.
- E-book threat to libraries? - thoughts on the growing popularity
of
e-books such as the Kindle, and how they might affect library services.
- Main developments in Shoreham - a summary of significant recent,
current and proposed projects in the town.
- AGM 2011 - essentials for the society's AGM on May 20, including
agenda, minutes and committee nomination form.
- What's the use? - Tony Vinicombe reflects on the purpose of the
Shoreham Society, and why it is still important for the town.
- Good news - Christopher Harris praises the developments at
Kingston
Barn (St Julians Lane) and Orchard Gate (Southlands Hospital).
The Winter 2010/11 edition
included:
- Bridge it in style - a report on the Shoreham
Society's
concerns about aspects of the proposed replacement of the shoreham
beach footbridge.
- Here's to the next 25 years - a celebration of the
Shoreham Society's first quarter-century, plus a recap of the silver
jubilee conservation award scheme.
- Shoreham Society online - an outline of the society's
website with an appeal for ideas to develop it further.

- Power to the people? - a reflection on the
implications
of the government's 'localism bill', concerns about Prince Charles'
